Do we ever love our hair?? Every day there's are women sitting is some beautician's chair doing torturous things so she can have beautiful hair. If we have curly hair, we want it straight. If we have straight hair, we want it curly. Brunettes want to be blonde and blondes just aren't blonde enough. Black women resort to a chemical process that has the same composition as drain cleaner to have manageable hair.

Even I relaxed my hair since I was 13. I subjected myself to be burned by the chemical, a dry itchy scalp, and ultimately severly damaged hair from years of the process. And heaven knows how much money I spent over the years at the hairdressers and buying at home kits and then all the stuff you buy to keep hair healthy. Not to mention the hours lost in the chair or doing my hair at home. It was always an event just to look good. So last year, at 40 I decided to go without. No more relaxer. What was left of my once shoulder length mane was a shaggy, lifeless patch of fuzz. So guess what I'm doing to it now.

My mom still had the hot comb she used on our hair when we were children. I heat it on a gas flame and straighten my hair. I want to see if I can go until the end of the year without any chemicals. The good thing is my hair is growing back and I love how thick it is. But if it's a little humid or I sweat like I do when I'm doing yardwork, I begin to resemble a Chia pet. Not a good look for me. So let's see if I can make it to the end of the year.

Oh yes, I'm a color fanatic. I've colored my hair so much over the years I can't remember what my own color is. Currently I'm intense red auburn. It's amazing that I have a hair left on my head.

So what do you do to your hair? Highlights, lowlights, bleach, perm, relaxer, color? Is your hairdresser's phone number in your cell phone directory? Do you schedule social events around having your roots retouched? Come on, share your stories about your best friend... your hair.
