Lucille Roberts, Fitness for Women, the company that pioneered the women's fitness revolution in 1970 with the opening of the first health club catering exclusively to women's fitness needs, has joined forces with the Revlon Corporation
to help combat women's cancers.
On April 30, 2005, the eighth annual Revlon Run/Walk for Women will take place
in New York City. Here, thousands of cancer survivors will stride alongside
their friends and family from Times Square to Central Park's East Meadow to
raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention. Proceeds from the event will
benefit a variety of health organizations that are leading the fight against
women's cancers including the National Women's Cancer Research Alliance [NWCRA],
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center/Gynecology Service, Columbia University
Breast Cancer Screening Partnership, and Gilda's Club New York City.
Lucille Roberts' Silver Sponsorship of this event is further testament of
the Roberts family's commitment to women's health. With the full support of
her family behind her, Ms. Roberts was a successful entrepreneur and tireless
advocate for the betterment of women both within and outside of club walls
until her untimely death from cancer in 2003 at age 59. Lucille Roberts'
husband, Bob Roberts, and her son, Kirk Roberts, continue to spearhead the
company's success and Ms. Roberts' lifelong vision.
"Lucille dedicated her entire professional life to helping women look
and
feel better. I'm honored to be able to continue her mission. Our work with the
Revlon Run/Walk represents her spirit and dedication to helping others
overcome life's obstacles," said Kirk Roberts.
A Health Expo will take place at the finish line of Revlon Run/Walk for
Women at 97th Street and 5th Ave. Representatives from Lucille Roberts health
clubs will be on hand to discuss programs and services offered at their
facilities, including the sale of Lucille Roberts/Revlon red wristbands to
benefit Revlon's cancer fund while supplies last.
From its humble beginnings at that single location, Lucille Roberts Health
Clubs has grown to become a $30 million fitness empire, with more than 50 gyms
throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and over 450 employees.
Earlier this year, the company launched Lucille Roberts Fitness Express, a
franchise model that offers a scaled-down version of its large fitness
centers, complete with all of the amenities and programs that has made the
Lucille Roberts brand of women's-only fitness famous.
