I know this might clue you into my age but I grew up watching well dressed well coifed women on TV.
I loved seeing the women of the 40's, 50's, and 60's wearing the right dress for the right occasion, perhaps a hat and gloves and the perfect
matching handbag. Of course there was never a hair out of place.
I know our current lifestyles are not conducive to dressing to the 9's when
we are constantly on the run. I was sorry to see the suit and tie go to the
wayside in many office settings, as casual Friday grew into casual everyday
of the week. I'm sure if people could get away with it they would wear their
pajamas and favorite fuzzy slippers too. We barely have enough time to remember
where we are when we wake up let alone spend time picking out the right outfit
to fit the day.
But it seems we have gone the other extreme. Women's fashions for everyday
wear has become more and more revealing leaving less to the imagination. And
from what I've seen I don't even want to imagine it. What comes to mind is the
low rider jeans that have been popular for the last few years here. Nothing
wrong with that style if you had the figure to carry off the look. What was
quite disturbing was the revealing shot of the wearer's undergarment or lack
thereof. Many times it was the glimpse of a thong the equivalent of dental floss
along a place where the sun doesn't shine that would get the wearer more than
a passing glance. Even on the skinniest girl it is not a flattering look.
What's scary is that now it seems that drag queens have better taste than
most women. I have seen women at social gatherings like weddings wearing things
that even a street walking transsexual wouldn't be caught dead in. Have we become
slaves to the dictates of the fashion industry or the whimsy of celebrities/wannabees?
Whatever happened to making your own statement or expressing your individuality?
But guess what's coming down the pike next! Dolce and Gabana are now selling
low rider jeans for guys. The ads includes some well developed males in a mirrored
room showing a bit of the treasure trail from the front and butt cleavage from
the back. Who knew plumber's crack would become fashionable??
