Oprah's Personal Trainer and McDonald's Build on Unprecedented Balanced Active Lifestyles' Commitment
McDonald's announces its renewed relationship with Bob Greene, physical fitness
expert and author of the new book, Total Body Makeover. Greene has signed with
McDonald's in 2005 to help build on the company's balanced, active lifestyles
platform. "McDonald's and I are working together to continue educating
people about leading balanced, active lifestyles -- realistically and for the
long-term," said Greene. "As a leader in the food industry, McDonald's
has a unique opportunity to reach out to people on so many levels. Together,
we are committed to helping people make better choices through food and energy
balance."
"McDonald's Go Active!(TM) American Challenge" - 2005
To support McDonald's ongoing commitment, Greene will bring his expertise
on health and fitness to the food/energy balance platform through:
-- Educational materials available in-restaurant
-- Participation in other high-profile activities, including speaking
engagements and media opportunities
-- Visiting several cities across the country as part of McDonald's
balanced, active lifestyles educational outreach, an extension of
"McDonald's Go Active! American Challenge" for 2005.
The http://www.goactive.com Web site
will be a focal point for the McDonald's Go Active! program. Customers can download
Greene's "Contract with Myself," initially created to help clients,
including Oprah, make a signed commitment to change their lifestyles for the
better. "McDonald's is thrilled to expand our relationship with Bob Greene
and build on his experience in the area of nutrition and exercise," said
Mike Donahue, Vice President of McDonald's U.S. Communications. "Bob has
worked with McDonald's to develop a powerful consumer outreach platform - one
that already has had a huge impact on the public and will continue as we unveil
more initiatives this year."
Making an Impact in 2004
In 2004, Greene took his experience to the road and touched millions of
customers through the "McDonald's Go Active! American Challenge."
During the Challenge:
-- Greene bicycled and walked more than 3,000 miles in a 36-day cross-
country tour to get people moving and understand the importance of food
choice and physical activity.
-- More than 5,000 customers signed Greene's "Contract with Myself."
-- McDonald's distributed more than 10-15 million stepometers nationwide
to encourage and promote the balanced, active lifestyle initiative.
The stepometers were part of McDonald's first-ever Go Active! Happy
Meal(R) for adults, which included a Premium Salad and bottle of water. As a
result of the Go Active! program launch, McDonald's became the fast food
industry leader in salad sales with 300 million Premium Salads sold. This
represents close to 600 million servings of vegetables in the United States.
At the end of the "Go Active! American Challenge" tour, Greene also
helped
to introduce new Happy Meal(R) Choices as part of McDonald's commitment to
children. Happy Meal Choices gives parents and younger customers the
opportunity to mix and match options like white or chocolate milk jugs, 100%
apple juice and Apple Dippers - fresh, sliced peeled apples in their Happy
Meals.
Get Started Now
To start off the New Year educating the public on living balanced, active
lifestyles, Greene recommends the following 'get moving' fitness tips:
Get Walking
-- Consult your doctor to review any health conditions before you begin
-- Choose comfortable shoes with thick flexible soles to absorb shock
-- Choose a safe place to walk
-- Find a partner to walk with and keep you accountable
-- Stretch before you begin
-- Walk 30 minutes a day, 2-3 times per week; increase your steps each
week
-- Start gradually and get faster as you go further
Keep Walking Fresh
-- Scout garage sales and flea markets
-- Volunteer to walk dogs at an animal shelter
-- Tour the open houses in your neighborhood
-- Sign up for a weekend charity walk event
-- Treat yourself - put a slice of lemon in your water bottle
Get Active and Eat Right
-- Build exercise into your life - find a time that works for you and
remember: your exercise is not negotiable
-- Eating habits are developed over a lifetime and shouldn't be changed
radically overnight. Gradually moderate consumption of foods that
aren't in your best interest and replace them with healthy counterparts
-- Work to increase your physical activity
-- Powerful results come from taking small steps towards your goal each
day
